French Supermarkets will Lower Heating Next Winter
French shops and supermarkets such as Carrefour, Intermarché, and Casino will lower the heating in winter to save energy. They will also switch off their illuminated signboards immediately after closing, they have agreed.
The measures, which will take effect in October, were announced on Monday by the retail trade association Perifem.
By reducing their energy consumption, the stores hope to avoid possible power shortages in the winter, which the French government has warned about.
President Emmanuel Macron said in a speech earlier this month that his government is working on an “austerity plan” to reduce energy consumption in the country. As a result, France, like other European countries, is preparing to do without Russian natural gas.
