Threads and Instagram Users are Getting Posts About Politics Again
Threads and Instagram users may soon again see posts about politics from accounts they don’t follow.
“Our goal is to introduce political recommendations in a responsible and personalized way,” Adam Mosseri, the head of the two platforms, said via his Threads account.
“I’ve been very vocal about the fact that it’s not our place to show people political content from accounts they don’t follow,” he acknowledged. “But a lot of people have made it clear that they want to see this content, and it’s been hard in practice to draw a clear line between what is and isn’t political content,” Mosseri said the change will roll out first in the United States, with other parts of the world rolling out next week.
On Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta in the United States will stop conducting fact-checks by experts on messages that spread quickly on Facebook or Instagram.
This change, of course, was met with concern. There is a fear that this could result in more disinformation appearing on social media. At the same time, Meta cited arguments that were not entirely correct. For example, it spoke of bias and censorship, while it has never formulated complaints about bias and chooses which posts it removes or makes less visible.
