Italy Reports the Highest Death Toll in One Day from Coronavirus
Italy reported 475 new deaths from the new coronavirus on Wednesday. That’s the highest one-day number of any country since the first case of infection was discovered in China late last year.
The total number of deaths in Italy is now 2,978, more than half of all cases outside of China, while the number of infections rose to 35,713.
The previous record high of 368 deaths in one day was also recorded in Italy on Sunday.
Italy, with a population of 60 million, has now registered 34.2 percent of all deaths officially attributed to COVID-19 around the world.
Numbers within Italy themselves remained stable, with two-thirds of the deaths – 1959 in total – in the northern Lombardy region around Milan, Italy’s financial and fashion capital.
The neighbouring region of Emilia-Romagna has a total of 458 fatalities and the Piedmont region 154 deaths.
