WHO: At Least 64 Attacks on Healthcare Facilities in Ukraine
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 64 attacks on hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the country since Russia invaded Ukraine.
This concerns two to three incidents per day. According to the WHO, the attacks have killed at least 15 people so far this week and injured 37 others.
The WHO also reports that 3.6 million Ukrainians have fled abroad. Nearly seven million inhabitants have been displaced, a third of whom suffer from chronic diseases. Due to the war, the supply of medicines has stopped, and many pharmacies in Ukraine are said to have been closed.
The organization condemns the attacks. “Healthcare facilities, staff and patients are not targets,” the WHO stated several times in recent weeks. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus previously said attacks on health facilities “violate international humanitarian law”.
