US President Donald Trump said in an interview that he was considering meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

In an interview published on Sunday, he also expressed doubts about his earlier decision to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.

“I might think about that. … Maduro would like to meet. And I am never against meetings,” Trump told online news site Axios on Friday.

Such a meeting would run counter to the US “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at expelling the Socialist President. Trump added, however, “but at the moment, I have turned down the invitation.”

More than a year ago, Guaidó proclaimed himself head of the transitional government after incumbent President Maduro won the presidential election in 2018.

According to the opposition, this would have involved large-scale fraud. Dozens of countries, including the US, recognize Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.
