After Failed Martial Law Declaration: Police Search South Korean President Yoon’s Office
A special investigation team has searched the office of South Korean President Yoon. The National Police Agency, Seoul Police Station and the parliament security service have also been turned inside out, the police unit said.
The president was reportedly not present at his office during the police operation. His security services were said to have obstructed the investigation, which meant that the investigators only had access to the offices where services for citizens are provided. Thus, the president’s main building was left out of consideration.
In addition, a prison official reports that former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted suicide in prison. He reportedly survived and is currently in stable condition. He is being held for his role in the imposition of martial law.
The opposition is trying to depose the president, but a first attempt has failed. Another attempt is expected to follow soon. Meanwhile, the speaker announces a parliamentary investigation in which Yoon may be publicly questioned.Because President Yoon, the former defence minister, and the former interior minister are under investigation for rebellion, they are not allowed to leave the country.
North Korea also reacted to the situation for the first time: “The shocking act of puppet Yoon Suk-yeol, who is facing impeachment and a crisis of governance, suddenly declaring martial law and brandishing the guns and knives of his fascist dictatorship without hesitation, has sown chaos throughout South Korea,” it said.
