EU Wants to Join US Against Russia in Attack on Ukraine
If Russia dares to attack Ukraine, it will face the European Union and allies like the United States. The EU wants to coordinate the punitive measures it is preparing with those of, for example, the Americans, EU leaders say.
The West is very concerned about Russia’s troops on the Ukrainian border. That could be the harbinger of new violence against Ukraine, Washington, among others, warns. Ukraine has already seen Russia annex Crimea and support rebels in the east of the country.
If Russia were indeed to hurt Ukraine, it could count on “huge sanctions” from the EU, outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his colleagues agreed on Thursday. They will coordinate those punitive measures, about which they do not yet want to say anything to increase the effect, with like-minded countries.
NATO and the G7, among others, have also spoken threatening words in recent days. That “overlap” strengthens the signal to Moscow, Rutte hopes.
