Report: CO2 Emissions Almost Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels
CO2 emissions, mainly caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, will return to pre-coronavirus levels this year.
The scientists of the Global Carbon Project for World Leaders made this gloomy announcement at the COP26 international climate summit in Glasgow.
Overall, global CO2 emissions will be just below the 2019 record, according to calculations presented on Thursday. However, the scientists say that emissions of gas and polluting coal will rise faster this year than they fell in the corona year 2020. China is currently responsible for a third of all CO2 emitted worldwide.
“This report puts us face to face with the facts,” study co-author Corrine Le Querre of the British University of East Anglia told the AFP news agency. “It shows what is happening in the real world as we talk here in Glasgow about tackling climate change.”
