Hong Kong Activist Jimmy Lai Prosecuted for Fraud
Hong Kong media mogul and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai have been charged with fraud. The case against Lai is one of many being fought against Beijing’s critics.
Dissident Joshua Wong was sentenced to a month-long prison sentence with two supporters on Wednesday for participating in a demonstration last year.
Jimmy Lai, 73, owner of the Apple Daily newspaper, is known for his links to the camp that fights for more democracy in the former British Crown Colony.
It is under the rule of a government that mainly functions as a puppet for the rulers in Beijing.
On Thursday, Lai and two of his managers appeared in court. According to court documents, the newspaper’s headquarters would have been used for purposes not permitted under the building lease.
Hundreds of agents raided the property in August, particularly the editorial staff of the Apple Daily.
