The Trial in Moscow Against Former US Marine Paul Whelan is Completed on Monday
The trial in Moscow against former US marine Paul Whelan will be completed on Monday. Whelan was arrested in December 2018 on an allegation of espionage.
If found guilty by the judge, he could face 20 years in prison.
The lawyers from both sides present their closing arguments, and the prosecutors submit their request for conviction. Whelan, 50, who holds a U.S.,
British, Canadian, and Irish passport, was arrested in 2018 for allegedly receiving state secrets. He denies the charges and says he has been tricked.
Whelan says he was in Russia for a wedding and got a USB stick from an acquaintance assuming it contained vacation photos.
His lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said that the knowledge that the USB stick gave is the only witness against Whelan. At the same time, the rest of his old acquaintances in Russia testified in his favour.
