First Coronavirus Infection on Mainland Spain
The new coronavirus has emerged on the Spanish mainland for the first time. A woman tested positive for the virus in the coastal region of Catalonia.
Earlier infections had been reported on the Spanish island of Mallorca and the Canary Islands.
Local media reports that a 36-year-old Italian was found to have the virus. She lives in Barcelona but travelled to the Italian region of Lombardy earlier this month. Many infections have been reported in that northern area in recent days.
The woman contacted a hospital on Monday because she had symptoms of illness.
Then it turned out that she was indeed infected. The authorities are still mapping who the woman has been in contact with. They have to be in quarantine for two weeks.
