The military in Myanmar shut down the internet in the country on the night from Sunday to Monday over protests against the coup that took place two weeks ago. Troops have also been deployed.

According to NetBlocks, a group that monitors internet connection, virtually the entire country is offline due to the “blackout of information” announced by the state on Sunday.

At the beginning of this month, a coup was committed by soldiers in the Southeast Asian country. The controversial head of government Aung San Suu Kyi, among others, was arrested. The coup has sparked major protests in the country. At least four hundred people have already been arrested.

Myanmar’s military tried unsuccessfully to quell a protest in the northern city of Myitkyina by shooting at protesters. Demonstrators opposing the internet blockade were dispersed with tear gas. Five journalists who reported on the demonstration in front of an electricity company were also arrested. Images on social media show how military vehicles and soldiers are now spreading through parts of the country.

The internet was also temporarily shut down in Myanmar last weekend in an attempt to quell the protests.
