Travellers can move a bit more freely within Europe from Monday. Then the many EU Member States will relax or end the border measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

This happens in France and neighbouring countries Belgium and Germany, among others.

The European Commission has called on the Member States of the Schengen area, which includes 26 European countries, in which travel is free, to stop their checks at internal borders on June 15.

Not all countries do this simultaneously or in the same way. For example, the badly hit Italy opened its borders earlier this month, and Spain will wait until June 21.

Germany had also already started phasing out border measures. The extra checks at the borders with neighbouring countries are now wholly discontinued.

Not all EU countries have stopped people at the border. For example, Sweden kept the borders with EU countries open.

Other countries, such as Denmark, are very selective about who they allow. For example, the Dutch are not yet allowed to go on holiday there. Tourists from Germany, Norway and Iceland are welcome.
