Shell and BP Pay Staff Travel Costs After US Abortion Ruling
Oil and gas companies Shell and BP will help employees in the United States with travel costs if they do not have access to certain medical services in the immediate area.
They are the first major oil companies to set up such a scheme after the US Supreme Court last week repealed the constitutional right to abortion.
The European oil multinationals both have offices and production sites in Texas. The southern state is expected to be one of 26 states where virtually all abortions will be banned after the reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973, which granted constitutional protection to the right to abortion.
Shell and BP join a range of other companies including Apple, Bank of America and Microsoft. Those companies also announced they would help employees with travel expenses and other services curtailed by last week’s ruling.
