India is the Third Country to Report More Than A Million Corona Infections
India is the third country to report more than a million corona infections. The authorities announced on Friday that a further 34,956 people had been diagnosed with the infectious virus.
The death toll from the virus outbreak now stands at over 25,000.
The virus is spreading around the country with 1.3 billion inhabitants. The authorities first discovered that someone had been infected at the end of January.
In May, the counter was already at 100,000 infections. However, a strict lockdown to prevent spread dramatically for millions of day labourers. They suddenly had no work and were sometimes stranded far from home.
That lockdown eased later, and India has now reported the highest number of infections in the world after the US (3.5 million corona cases) and Brazil (2 million corona cases).
These figures do not provide a complete picture, because not everyone who becomes infected is also tested.
The Indian government emphasizes that the number of corona cases per million inhabitants is much lower than in some European countries.
More than 635,000 patients are also said to have recovered. However, new lockdowns are being introduced in some places.
