China Denies Existence of Secret Police Stations
The Chinese government has denied that it runs “secret police stations” abroad. The country is accused in a trial in the United States of running an office in Chinatown in Manhattan to monitor and possibly pressure compatriots living in New York.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that “China respects international law and the legal sovereignty of all countries. “
In this case, 61-year-old Chen Jinping confessed to having had “a secret police station” in Chinatown.
American law requires that people who work for another nation register as such. Chen has not done so and is, therefore, “an illegal foreign agent”. He could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. The verdict is at the end of May.
In several countries, there have been reports of offices where the Chinese police or secret service would secretly keep an eye on compatriots abroad.
