The wait staff can keep cash tips themselves but have recently handed in 40 percent of the tipped tips. They go to the kitchen staff as a disguised wage increase, writes the newspaper.

For the chain, it is more tax-efficient to arrange it in this way. The trade unions say that the operating staff are up to 250 pounds a month due to the new policy.

According to the trade unions, more restaurants tamper with the tips to meet the legal requirements for minimum payment. Employees of McDonald’s in the United Kingdom are currently campaigning under the name ‘McStrike’ against zero-hour contracts and lousy working conditions.
