Honda and Nissan to Merge in 2026
Japanese car manufacturers Honda and Nissan want to merge in 2026. Together, they hope to better cope with China’s competition.
The two Japanese car manufacturers signed a letter of intent during a joint press conference in Tokyo on Monday. The intention is to conclude the talks in June next year. Honda also announced it will buy back up to 1.1 trillion yen (6.6 billion pounds) of its shares.
The new merged company must be listed on the stock exchange in August 2026. Both companies will retain their brands, including Honda’s large motorcycle division.
Mitsubishi—Nissan is the main shareholder, and they may also join later. Mitsubishi wants to decide on this at the end of January. The three companies produce 8 million vehicles each year.
