104 Journalists Killed in 2024, More Than Half in Gaza: Particularly Deadly Year
In 2024, 104 journalists were killed worldwide, more than half of them in Gaza, according to a report by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which calls it “a particularly deadly year”.
After 129 deaths in 2023, “2024 will be one of the worst years ever”. “The carnage that is taking place in Palestine before the eyes of the entire world.” In 2024, 55 Palestinian media workers were killed there.
“Since the war began on October 7, 2023, the number of Palestinian journalists killed has risen to at least 138,” making the area “one of the most dangerous in the history of modern journalism, after Iraq, the Philippines and Mexico”.
After the Middle East, Asia-Pacific is the most dangerous region for journalists, with 20 deaths, including 6 killings in Pakistan, 5 in Bangladesh and 3 in India.
Ukraine
In Europe, “the war in Ukraine has again claimed victims on the continent, with 4 journalists killed in 2024, compared to 13 in 2022 and 4 in 2023”.
520 journalists are in prison worldwide, a sharp increase from 2023 (427) and 2022 (375). “With 135 journalists behind bars, China – including Hong Kong – remains the world’s largest prison for media professionals”.
