European Commission on Trump Criticism: Ukraine is a Democracy

The European Union believes that US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukraine and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is unjustified. “President Zelensky was legitimately elected in free, fair and democratic elections.
Ukraine is a democracy; Putin’s Russia is not,” a spokesperson for the European Commission said on Thursday.
The European Commission said this in response to Trump’s statements on Wednesday, who said that Zelensky is “a dictator without elections.”
The spokesperson did not directly answer when asked what Trump’s statement means for possible peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He said the European Commission is in consultation with various parties and member states. This is an “ongoing process.”
The spokesperson repeated that a solution for Ukraine cannot be discussed without involving Ukraine and the European Union. “The security of Ukraine is the security of the European Union.”
