Zelenski Reports That Nearly 100,000 Inhabitants of Cities have Been Evacuated
Nearly 100,000 people have been evacuated from besieged cities in Ukraine in recent days, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Evacuations took place in, among others, Sumi, Enerhodar and the vicinity of Kyiv.
However, people cannot leave the southeastern port city of Mariupol. According to Zelensky, this is because Russian forces are blocking evacuations.
Russia says it is at the hands of right-wing extremist militias that want to keep the civilian population in Mariupol as human shields. For example, they would have hijacked buses destined for evacuations.
Another attempt will be made on Friday to allow civilians to leave Mariupol. There will also be humanitarian corridors elsewhere in the country.
