Theresa May Fires British Secretary Of Defense
Theresa May fires British Secretary of Defense for a Leak over Huawei. Gavin Williamson, the British Secretary of Defense, has been fired for leaking information from a closed meeting of the National Security Council, the British Security Council.
Prime Minister Theresa May informed him on Wednesday.
On April 24, an unidentified source revealed that the United Kingdom plans,
to eliminate Chinese telecom manufacturer Huawei from the core of the upcoming 5G network.
Huawei is the global leader in telecom network equipment.
The United States is forcing Western allies to keep the Chinese company out of 5G networks,
referring to the risk of espionage.
A representative of Prime Minister May indicated shortly after the leak,
that the release of information from the British Security Council is considered “very serious”.
“Convincing evidence” would point to Williamson
The investigation revealed that Williamson cooperated less well than other members of the National Security Council.
May has informed her former minister that the investigation provides “conclusive evidence” pointing to Williamson.
“No other convincing version of the events found to explain this leak has been found,”
the prime minister said in her letter.
In a statement on Twitter, Williamson denies being the source of the leak.
“I strongly deny that I was in any way involved in this leak and I am convinced that a thorough formal investigation would release me.”
42-year-old Williamson was Secretary of Defense since November 2017.
He is succeeded by Penny Mordaunt, who until now served as Minister for Development Aid.
Huawei refuses ever spying for China.
The United States has never given public evidence that this is happening.
