Google News Available in Spain Again After Eight Years
Google News will be available again in Spain after eight years. Google parent Alphabet announced that it was reviving the service after Google News was previously shut down due to a Spanish rule that required companies to pay for the use of news by third parties.
Madrid enacted the European Union’s copyright rules, which were revised in 2020, last year. This allows media companies to negotiate directly with the tech giant.
That move prompted Google to make Google News available again in Spain. That move was announced last year. “Today, on the global 20th anniversary of Google News, and after an almost eight-year hiatus, Google News returns to Spain,” Fuencisla Clemares, vice president for Google Iberia, said in a blog post.
She also said the company also plans to launch Google News Showcase, the payment method for news publishers, in Spain as soon as possible.
