China Launches First Fully Electric Cargo Ship

China has launched its first fully electric cargo ship, marking a major step in decarbonising global shipping. The 10,000-tonne vessel, powered entirely by battery storage, completed its maiden voyage along the Yangtze River earlier this month.

With shipping accounting for nearly 3% of global emissions, the breakthrough is being hailed as a technological milestone. The vessel can travel up to 1,000 kilometres on a single charge and will primarily transport coal and construction materials.

Environmental groups welcome the development but urge China to accelerate its transition from coal, arguing that transporting fossil fuels with clean ships only solves part of the problem.
