Brussels Warns British: Do Not Mess With Divorce Certificate
If the British government fiddles with the separation agreement with the European Union, it will not be able to conclude a trade agreement with the EU.
The European Commission issued this warning after reports that London would like to revert to important agreements from the divorce deed.
The government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson would like to get rid of the hard-won compromise across the Irish border, British media report.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed out that these agreements are “essential for peace and stability” in Ireland and Northern Ireland and for the European common market.
The withdrawal agreement concluded a year ago by the EU and the UK is “a prerequisite for any future trade relationship”. That is why von der Leyen says he is counting on London to implement the agreement.
