Australian Prime Minister’s WeChat Account Disappeared
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s WeChat account has disappeared. Australian politicians accuse China of interfering with the account.
“What the Chinese government has done by shutting down the Prime Minister’s account is effectively foreign interference in our democracy,” said Senator James Paterson of the same party as Morrison.
Morrison’s account appears to have been replaced by an account called “Australian Chinese new life”. That name was registered in October last year, but the account history would show that it is Morrison’s account.
WeChat is the dominant messaging app in China. Morrison created the account in 2019 to make it easier to connect with the Chinese community in Australia.
WeChat is owned by Chinese technology company Tencent and is regularly censored by Chinese authorities.
