Japan Executes Akihabara Massacre Perpetrator

The man who killed seven people in a knife attack in Tokyo in 2008 has been executed in Japan. That writes the BBC.

Tomohiro Kato, 39, was 25 when a truck rammed into a crowd in the Akihabara district of the Japanese capital, killing three people. He then stabbed four people to death with a knife and injured eight others.

Kato admitted at his trial that he acted out of anger at online harassment. His trial sparked a heated debate in Japan at the time about the dangers of the internet and the shortcomings in mental health care for young people.

Kato was hanged on Tuesday in a Tokyo prison. It is the first death row inmate to be executed in the country this year. There are still about 100 death row inmates in Japanese prisons.
