Ukraine is not opening evacuation routes for people who want to flee to safer places because of the dangers on the roads in eastern Ukraine.

Due to Russia’s offensive in the region, it is not safe to let civilians use the roads, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said.

“All the people waiting to flee, be patient, please stay,” Vereshchuk said on social media, where she always announces the evacuation routes.

The mayor of Mariupol issued a call on Friday for all residents in his city to be evacuated. Vadim Bojchenko wants the 100,000 remaining inhabitants of the port city to be able to leave safely as soon as possible.

In recent days, people in eastern Ukraine have not often had the opportunity to escape a conflict zone safely. On Wednesday, only a humanitarian corridor was opened for people in Mariupol.

The evacuation routes are agreed upon by Ukraine and Russia. The countries accuse each other of not fulfilling the agreements, which means that the routes often have to be closed again quickly.
