UK Retail Sales Rise Despite Cost Pressures

UK retail sales rose by 2.1% in July 2025, surprising economists who had predicted a slowdown.

Strong demand for clothing and household goods helped offset weaker sales in food and fuel. Online shopping continues to grow, accounting for nearly 30% of all transactions.

Retailers warn, however, that persistent inflation and high interest rates could weigh on consumer confidence later in the year.
