Twelve Dead in Georgia Ski Resort Restaurant

Twelve people were found dead in a restaurant at a ski resort in Georgia. It is believed that carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause. The deceased were in the sleeping area of the restaurant, the police announced on Monday.
“In the bedroom on the second floor of the Indian restaurant in Gudauri, the bodies of twelve people who worked in the same facility were found,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement. “Preliminary examination shows no traces of violence on the bodies of the victims,” it said. The victims were said to be eleven foreigners and one Georgian.

The gruesome discovery was made on Saturday. A photo of the restaurant at the foot of the mountains shows it as three stories high, with an upper section believed to be staff quarters. Initial findings indicate that a generator had been placed inside the building, “close to the rooms,” Georgian authorities said.

“This oil-fired generator was started after the building lost power on Friday,” the same source said. An investigation has been launched, and a forensic examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This tragedy has no apparent connection with the tensions in this Caucasus country since the party in charge there, Georgian Dream, claimed victory in parliamentary elections on October 26.

Incidentally, this is not the first time the ski resort has made headlines for a tragedy. In 2018, a problem with a popular ski lift abruptly fell with its passengers. Two Russians, a Swede and four Ukrainians were injured.
