At a summit later this week, the presidents of Lithuania, Poland and Romania will ask other leaders of the European Union for a support package for Belarus.

The proposed package includes a favourable trade arrangement with the EU, visa-free travel and support in negotiations to join the World Trade Organization, the Lithuanian president said in a statement on Monday.

In a separate statement by the three presidents, the proposed package was called a “proposal for a democratic Belarus”.

Financial support for reforms and assistance with the diversification of the energy sector and the transition to a liberal economy is also part of the support package.

Poland wants the European Union to provide Belarus with the financial aid of at least € 1 billion as part of a “Marshall Plan” to rebuild the country, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is in Brussels on Monday to meet with the foreign ministers of the EU countries.
