Tropical Storm Nana is Swelling to Hurricane Strength
Tropical Storm Nana has strengthened to hurricane strength, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports.
The NHC warns that the hurricane, which is heading towards the Central American country of Belize, could cause a dangerous storm surge if it makes landfall.
The hurricane is also expected to strike in parts of Guatemala and Mexico. By the time Nana gets there, she will likely have weakened into a tropical storm again.
Thursday at 5:00 a.m., the hurricane was 95 kilometres from Belize City with maximum wind speeds of 75 kilometres per hour, according to the NHC.
That issued a hurricane warning off the coast of Belize from Belize City to the border with Guatemala. Nana qualifies as a “minor hurricane”.
The NHC also warned that Belize must expect up to 200 millimetres of rain and a storm surge of 90 centimetres.
